The Icelandic Love Corporation
Formerly one of advertising’s most “popular” women; A long-time successful member of the brand police. An artist too, yes, once upon a time with the Icelandic Love Corporation (1996 – 2001), but sometimes with others or, like Under a Couple, or in the Ether project, and even alone. Now, a washed up self-proclaimed polymath, a so called T-person, though upside down with little focus or proper direction, consumed by the wonders of words and letters, typography, editorial design, visual communication, and just seeing the enormous potential of everyone and everything.
Very much wondering what meaning is; whether there actually is any, and if not: Does it matter much? On the flip side: If there is any, meaning that is, where is it to be found? And how do we know it when we see it? Might it be hiding in plain sight? Is it the visual, the written, nature, the context, the pattern … Why? What? Where? How? When? Who? Who cares?! Are we all in a state of semantic collapse or completely asemic?
Always immensely bothered by the frigging obvious trouble humans have created, and working hard, in academia, to ensure designers feel they can do something about it by taking responsibility and, hopefully, the lead. Design is a verb, so, I have documented action and activity to counter this worry. It makes it better, little by little. Don't you agree?
Currently Associate professor of Visual communication in the Department of Art, Music, and Design, at the University of Bergen. Formerly enjoying a comfortable (really?) position at the IAA (Iceland Academy of the Arts), bearing the cumbersome title of Professor (too young for it, obviously), as well as Programme director for the MA in Design. Even more formerly; Programme director for Visual communication, and, you know, teacher there, as in Iceland University teaching Print design and how to work with publication designers; excursions into other universities such as Reykjavik University, and Bifröst University. All these include mentoring students during final work, whether it be thesis or design work. Also, all these jobs involved designing education for the unsuspecting, designing and teaching design and design theory courses, lecturing, a bit of publishing, very very very many meetings, and lastly, but most importantly: constant learning. Oh! The gratitude that brings. Note: I am hooked on the metadesigners.org Relational model, and the MA in Design (IAA) developed version. It works.
Anyway; This one can easily be misled by a rather untamed curiosity and her interest in other peoples’ doings and makings.
Artistic religion: Metadesign. Metamodernism. Radical optimism. I shall be the Sacred clown, whenever I so please.
